PL_Genesis: Frontiers of Collaboration Hackathon — The Next Chapter of Open Innovation

Introducing PL_Genesis: Frontiers of Collaboration (opens new window), the next phase of Protocol Labs' flagship hackathon and a call to teams working on the building blocks of frontier technology: Web3, Crypto, AI, Robotics, and Neurotechnology.

Last season, PL_Genesis: Modular Worlds challenged builders to assemble a new internet from composable, user-owned primitives. The goal was clear: move beyond monolithic platforms and toward interoperable systems where storage, compute, identity, and incentives are modular by design.

Builders responded.

  • 1,900+ builders registered
  • 350+ projects shipped
  • $250K+ in prizes awarded
  • 20+ teams advanced into Founders Forge
  • Multiple teams now in active investment conversations across the PL network

PL Genesis Hackathon Launch

# Now We're Expanding the Scope

Frontiers of Collaboration is grounded in a new reality: the most meaningful breakthroughs are happening across frontier domains, not within isolated verticals. Crypto coordinating autonomous agents. AI operating on decentralized infrastructure. Robotics interacting with programmable economies. Neurotechnology reshaping how humans interface with machines.

This is about the collaboration layer between these systems.

With $150K+ in prizes, targeted sponsor bounties across frontier technology domains, and a potential pathway into the Founders Forge early-stage accelerator, Frontiers of Collaboration is built for teams designing foundational systems.

Watch the Founders Forge documentary (opens new window), capturing the first cohort’s path from early prototype to venture-ready company, offering a transparent look at what the PL_Genesis pipeline can unlock for builders.

Whether you're launching something new or advancing an existing project, the invitation is open. Integrate at least one sponsor bounty and build something that pushes the frontier forward.

# More Than Just Another Hackathon

  • $150K+ prize pool across Fresh Code, Existing Code, and sponsor bounties, with continued additions throughout the season.
  • Founders Forge early-stage accelerator → High-potential early teams are fast-tracked into our structured program with technical mentorship, venture guidance, and direct investor access.
  • Build Stations across key cities → Closed-format, in-person collaboration nodes hosted with trusted developer hubs for high-signal teams who prefer IRL environments.
  • Continuous builder pathway → Access to Protocol Labs programs, ecosystem grants, and capital partners beyond the hackathon window.

PL Genesis is not a one-off event. It is the front door to a broader builder pipeline.

# The Focus Areas

Builders can compete across the following domains:

Focus Area Why It Matters What You Could Build
Web3 & Digital Human Rights Sovereign infrastructure is foundational to a resilient internet. Privacy-preserving identity rails • Cross-chain coordination tools • Self-custodial UX for AI-native apps
Crypto & Decentralized Economies Programmable incentives unlock new coordination models. Agent-to-agent payment systems • Onchain treasuries for autonomous systems • DeFi rails for machine commerce • Private DeFi • Consumer Apps
AI, AGI & Robotics AI is powerful but opaque; infrastructure must be verifiable and interoperable. Decentralized training pipelines • ZK-verified inference • Agent marketplaces • Robotics data marketplaces
Neurotech & Human-Machine Interfaces The boundary between cognition and computation is shifting. Secure neural data storage • Onchain consent frameworks • Brain-computer coordination protocols

# Prize Structure

  • Fresh Code$50,000 prize pool for new projects started within the hacking period (10 teams × $5,000)
  • Existing Code$50,000 prize pool for continued development and meaningful integration (10 teams × $5,000)
  • Sponsor Bounties$50,000+ in targeted awards tied to sponsor challenges

Every project must clearly integrate at least one sponsor bounty.

High-potential teams will be considered for Founders Forge regardless of final prize placement.

# Hackathon Partners

This season's sponsors represent core infrastructure and frontier systems:

Filecoin · Flow · Impulse AI · Lit Protocol · NEAR · Physical AI · Starknet · Storacha · Zama · + more

Frontiers of Collaboration Hackathon is Live

From consumer DeFi and agent commerce to decentralized storage, zero-knowledge scalability, programmable key management, AI-native chains, robotics infrastructure, and embodied intelligence — these partners are shaping the stack builders will rely on for the next decade.

More ecosystem collaborators will be announced throughout the season.
